What is left to say when even our families, our communities, and our national conversation is reduced to epithets and shouted angry attacks?
A great deal - as I have found out to my eternal chagrin - and this is not a happy - or in any way satisfied or content - awareness.
For better or worse this has become grist for my mill .
I share with other writers - not the least of which is one of my heroes - Charles Dickens - who wrote about his times being the best of times - and the worst of times.
βIt was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.β
β Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities
In the time of Dickens - as in these times - we seem to be crossing some great divide which will forever remain a wilderness one never ever to be tamed.
In these United States today we live in what was never ever a perfect nation but one which - for an all too brief time - was alive with brilliant ideas which seemed just beyond our reach.
The language used by the British colonists of 1776 who sought a path free of tyranny was elevated - and both emotionally and intellectually intelligent.
Today we live in a successfully divided and conquered backwater about equivalent to what we might well define as a third world nation state.
And because our hearts and minds have been reduced to hateful political rhetoric - we have - quite successfully - been victimized once again by tyranny.
The current Great Divide exists in all of our hearts and minds.
Although this divide can be reduced to geographical and racial and cultural and political - and even gender - divides - it always may be traced to our own hearts and minds as human beings.
This essay is inspired - as many of my essays are - by the work of fellow writers - who struggle as I do - with this conversation.
My thanks to stellar human being and fellow musician and writer
for the following note and for the link to the film we must watch - painfully - but necessarily. It may seem to some that opening such an essay with this song is crass and insensitive - but I - as many of us do - understand the world and our place in it through music.
And as song may often be one of the best keys we have available to the unlocking of the shadowed territory of the heart.
No need to even hint - for most of us - that what we are facing is dire and apocalyptic.
And no need to state - for most of us - that this apocalypse has beenΒ caused by fellow humans.
And little need to point out - for most of us - that a significant number of delusional humans are in deep denial that this apocalypse is even happening.Β
And little need to point out that over the past few years that we who gave up so much to try to warn our fellow friends and families are now hated for what we did.
It proves a seemingly fatalistic and irrational and dangerous disintegration of the human heart - a kind of sociopolitical and mass consciousness of poisonous hatred and anger.
When those few of us who have managed to maintain compassion for ourselves and others - are exposed to the acidic and corrosive force of this terrible anger and hostility - it can be truly shocking and devastating.
Today - we face as humans - the terrible consequences of human hatred and anger and hostility - torched as it has been by our old foe - tyranny - a few overarching principles become clear.
It has caused a great divide to occur among humans - where possiblyΒ as many as two thirds of humans have made a fatal and tragic error -Β the consequences of which are almost certain to escalate.
And this great divide was not brought about by some great natural calamity - or βact of Godβ - but was human crafted.
And - without boring us all too tears by rehashing the events of theΒ past five years or so - it came down to the simple decision whether or not to succumb to irrational fear of a βvirusβ and to become vaccinated.Β
We all know the lockdowns and masking and widespread restrictions on human freedom were symbolic - as was the willingness - even eagerness - to become vaccinated.Β
Symbolic of a pandemic of consciousness - one where a certain tyrannical βeliteβ managed to trigger a veritable cascade of human venality - selfishness and fear and hostility and anger which has resulted in mass panic and both sociopolitical and psychological instability.
The consequences of this surround us now and no need to go searching for esoteric causation.Β
Those who stood bravely and stoically for these unalienable rights have been reduced by the great distilling effect of tyranny - this weaponized dividing tool - this double edged sword of apartheid.
Approximately one third of humans now stand divided from the other two thirds by far more than the initial causes called into question here - now it is death itself which is serving to provide the divide.
Death stalks the planet - and it is death itself - the line of the inescapable apartheid of tyranny - which provides the final divide which is crossed by no man or woman.
I link this film - as it sums up - all too cogently - what I - and many others - have been warning about as we worked to provide on going chronicles of this terrible epidemic of the human mind.
There are many different academic definitions for tyranny - but the very best way to define it is to feel the icy and deadly grip.
As always - may the creator of us all - and of all we know - bless the peacemakers.
