Understanding The Rise of Fascism or Totalitarianism

I have worked hard through the long years of 2020 until now - nearly 2023 - to see this rise of totalitarianism through a kaleidoscope. This kaleidoscope isn’t rose colored glasses (although I get accused of that) but something different.

Through this kaleidoscope I repeatedly try to see the potential benefits. They may be found but it is amidst an atmosphere of sadness. At first in early 2020 I woke surprised every morning. Surprised amidst this top-down fascist totalitarianism the sun still rose at all. Surprised any of us woke up.

Like all Grandmas everywhere I worried over our adult kids and our grandchildren. By March 2020 it appeared the entire planet had gone off the deep end. Although it sometimes felt like it I didn’t think I had personally gone loony tunes. I searched for any way to cure this illness which seemed to have gripped the planet in an icy embrace.

This illness for me was never about Covid 19 per se but about those who were attempting to use the crisis for control. Early on I learned from online friends about the World Economic Forum (WEF). I suspected this group was central to what appeared to be an attempt to rule the world.

People really had a difficult time with this. Everyone had become so politicized and divided that everything became filtered by the lens of left over right. They believed there was a political solution. There was not and it turned out that leadership across the planet was associated with the WEF. I could write volumes on the WEF but my readers are 100% aware so will skip that exercise.

My take through the kaleidoscope was that these self-appointed leaders were severely mentally ill. For a long while I used the concepts of toxic narcissism and associated psychopathology to describe their behavior. This wasn’t inaccurate but it also wasn’t that helpful.

What became helpful was to see the interlocked manifestation of codependency inherent in fascism. I refer here to my earlier post on codependency and fascism.

FASCISM & CODEPENDENCY - PART I

Codependency is a friendlier concept. There are many instances for people to relate to in their everyday lives. The relatability of this pervasive sickness of fascism to each of us as individuals is central.

But the good news is by finding a better way of describing this psychology of fascism we can begin nonthreatening discussions of how to outwit it. Fascism is frightening but it is also not that intelligent. Fascism caves like bullies do when confronted on all sides with the truth. As more and more people become aware the bullies will fail to bully.

But the big question relates to changes we make after we defeat the bullies. How do we make certain fascism is defeated and doesn’t recur?

The real core answer is constant vigilance. It is up to us the citizens who run this place to always be on the lookout for instances of it. We must teach ourselves and our children to recognize abusive behavior. Our own gut reactions to being played, manipulated and potentially abused must serve as warnings.

Fascism always catches us off guard. It isn’t enough to deal effectively with fascism once it arises. We must have early warning systems in place to deal with instances of abuse and disarm them effectively. It will be a process - but a welcome one considering the alternatives.

We must figure out methods of building cultures which select for mental balance, kindness, intelligence and compassion. Most importantly we cannot afford cultures which select for abuse and codependency.

We will do this “not because it is easy but because it is hard”.

It may not refer to going to the moon or other planets this time. We may make different decisions based on what we now know. We may decide to create an interdependent culture on our present planet which allows us and future generations to coexist in relative peace. Who knows?
