The Vietnam War and all the social unrest of the sixties seemed to compress the minds of creative musicians and the best music since 1943 (another time of conflict) was written and performed.

Tennessee trivia: Rachmaninoff played his final concert in Knoxville.

As much as I love Rachmaninoff anywhere there is some damn good music today. But then I am an idealistic "Bear Shit" entranced idealist who never cared much for anything but music. One of our musicians after a demanding session last night proceeded to sing Sinatra with amazing finesse. I haven't given up on anyone, certainly not the sixties generation or the smarter younger ones just yet. Give me time. I have a habit of finding revelations where ever I look. Even amidst the Apocalypse.

Far be it from me to criticize the Chairman of the Board! And then, there was that Johnny Cash fellow, Willie Nelson, and Ray Charles. But I still contend that the music from 1964 - 73 was an explosion of creativity.

As our civilization dies, I only hope that someone has the sense to chisel some words of wisdom on rock tablets so that future archeologists can make some sense of what went wrong in the 21st century AD.

The music of our generation still stands as urgently important to the young musicians I know. The gear is digital now and sound has suffered with digital recording. But it can be surprisingly good in good hands and with some analog equipment. But then the musicians I hang out with are far from establishment clones. Many who did take part have quit touring and are paying better attention.
